On the day after the death of the iconic South African leader Nelson Mandela, John Dorney has a quick look at how Irish and South African politics have intersected in the last years. At the time of writing December 6, , tributes are pouring in from throughout the world to Nelson Mandela, the long-time ANC leader and first South African President elected by universal, non-racial suffrage.

Mandela, undeniably a brave and charismatic figure, has also become a consensual icon. He is held to embody a series of values — democracy, anti-racism, non-violence and reconciliation that are held to underpin modern liberal democracies. Mandela was not always such an undisputed figure of adoration in the west however. And while in Ireland today it would seem as if everyone opposed Apartheid during its existence, it was not always so.

For the next 70 or 80 years, the Irish presence in South Africa was mainly in the form of troops in the British Army and the odd colonial official. The British in South Africa inherited a long settled European population as well as an indigenous Africa one. In the s, especially after the British banned slavery, the Afrikaner population of the Cape grew restive.

They had long enslaved the native population to work on their farms and maintained, being devout Calvinists, that the Bible gave them sanction to do so. For this and other reasons, several convoys of Afrikaner, or Boer settlers set off into the interior of South Africa to be free from British rule. The relatively small but heavily armed settler convoys managed to defeat much greater numbers of Zulu, Ndebele and other African warriors to carve out mini-republics in Natal, Transvaal and Orange River areas.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Irish republicans identified passionately with the Boer Republics struggle against Britain.

Lions head coach Warren Gatland has already voiced concerns over sufficient preparation time for his squad. But as things stand, the Lions’ official confirmation of an eight-match itinerary means an opening fixture scheduled for the Saturday after England’s top two clubs go head-to-head at Twickenham. There has so far been no indication from Premiership Rugby that they might be prepared to bring forward their showpiece season finale by a week in , following the Guinness PRO14’s example.

It is understood that as part of their tour build-up, the Lions would like to play a game – potentially on June 26 and possibly against the Barbarians – before departure. The Lions’ New Zealand tour saw them leave London two days after the Premiership final, arrive in Auckland on the Wednesday and then play their first game little more than 72 hours later. While jet-lag and time zones will not be anywhere as big a problem travelling to South Africa, a full week’s preparation with his entire squad – as opposed to staggered arrivals because of domestic finals – would be like gold dust for Gatland.

Two of the three Tests against newly-crowned world champions South Africa will be staged at altitude in Johannesburg. The schedule is two matches less than recent game Lions tours, and it will encompass visits to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Nelspruit and Pretoria. Gatland, who will be Lions boss for a third successive tour following Australia and New Zealand two years ago, said: “I am absolutely thrilled with how this schedule looks.

Irish single men. Thousands of photos and profiles of men seeking romance, love and marriage from Ireland.

Ireland is a dynamic, lively, modern country with a young population and a successful, technologically-orientated economy. Ireland also remains a country of deeply revered traditions where music, conversation, dance, celebrations and festivals are an important part of life. The overall friendliness and hospitable nature of them makes them desirable partners. Marriage is treated as a lifelong commitment and is a sacred vow; strong ties with family members are common amongst the Irish people.

Men are highly individualistic and they tend to assume personal responsibility for their own lot in life and are able to achieve great things on their own without having to depend on others. They place importance on life success and generally value intelligence over looks. What woman would not desire such a partner? And their accent is to die for! This mostly Catholic country enjoys a temperate climate.

During the winter months temperatures rarely drop below freezing and snow is uncommon, but showers and rain can occur at any time of the year.

Gaslighting is nothing new in modern politics. Day after day, massive media and political institutions both downplay the importance of certain elements of world history, while massively inflating others. For those of us critical of the contemporary world, this is hardly news. One has come to expect that the story presented to you on a variety of topics are warped to a nigh unrecognizable degree. And yet the lengths to which the worldwide media has gone in trying to erase the existence of Irish slaves still shocks me.

So, were the Irish slaves? Before I answer this question, I will set myself a ground rule. While this barbaric practice would constitute a form of slavery to any reasonable person, for my mostly Anglo interlocutors, it does not. Never mind the fact that those children would have been deprived of their homeland and their culture by the practice. Or in Jamaica. Or Australia. Irish slaves have existed in one form or another since the genesis of Irish as an identity.

Celtic Ireland had a slave caste in the form of the daer fuidhir.
